Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Therapy was originally developed by Aaron Beck in the 1960’s as a treatment for depression. Since that time it has been identified as an effective treatment model not simply for depression, but also for post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, fears and phobias, eating disorders and much more. Cognitive therapy has an emphasis on thoughts and beliefs. Behavior therapy focuses on the past, the future, and is action oriented. The combination of these two therapies create a bedrock for helpful therapy.
Who does CBT help?
Each person is different and the outcomes of therapy can never be guaranteed. However, CBT has been shown to be helpful for people of all ages. It can be tailored for different age groups, taking into account developmental levels and cognitive abilities. It can be modified for different environments, settings, and both mental and physical diagnoses.
CBT is also skills based. This means that if someone can learn the behavior skills and cognitive skills, they can apply them to many different situations throughout life. Once the skills are learned, they can be applied without the aid of a therapist. The obvious outcome is that therapy does not have to last a lifetime.
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) is a specific therapy designed to treat children with trauma and PTSD. It is safe to implement, provides support for the care takers, and is effective with children up to age 17.
Our therapists are specifically trained in TF-CBT. TF-CBT has been used with the Department of Family Protective Services, helping children with traumatic grief and loss, and has worked with children who have experienced and witnessed violence and sex abuse.
